Tom Hanks To Play Minister and TV Icon Mister Rogers In Biopic

Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks is set to play the role of beloved minister and TV icon "Mister Rogers" in an upcoming biopic.

2018 seems to be a big year for biopics with big names attached. Mere hours after Hudson revealed a perfect bit of casting news by sharing that she’s set to play Aretha Franklin in an upcoming biopic, TriStar Pictures announced that Hanks is set to play Fred Rogers, more commonly known as Mr. Rogers, in the upcoming biopic You Are My Friend. America’s movie dad, meet America’s TV neighbor.

You Are My Friend originated from a true story. It came from the real-life friendship between Rogers and Tom Junod, when the cynical journalist begrudgingly accepted an assignment to write a profile piece but finds his perspective on life transformed during the process.

Marielle Heller (Diary of a Teenage Girl) will direct from a screenplay by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster (Transparent, Beautiful Ruins).

“This is the perfect alchemy of talent coming together at the perfect time to remind us all of the transformative power of kindness and respect to heal and to unite," said Hannah Minghella, President of TriStar Pictures in Monday's announcement.

Fred Rogers, who played Mister Rogers, was most known for his preschool educational series titled "Mister Roger's Neighborhood" that ran from 1968 to 2001. Rogers died in 2003 at the age of 74. Fred Rogers' youngest son John said in a video that the family couldn't be happier with Hanks' casting for a whole bunch of reasons ... mostly because Fred was apparently a big Tom Hanks fan. John says Fred really respected and enjoyed Hanks' work, especially "Forrest Gump." As far as any involvement in the project, John says he hasn't been approached to get involved or consult Hanks for the role just yet. But he is open to it.
